TESTIMONIALS

“Gabrielle has been my marketing and communications go-to person for over 10 years. Her unique skill set includes the ability to make sense of complex engineering data, often authored in a foreign language, and shape it into a compelling message for the US market, and to do it on-time, and on-budget. More importantly, her talent, work ethic, and personal integrity have earned her my highest compliment - I trust her completely.”

Estimates

I begin all projects by first speaking  with clients to gather as much information as possible about the project and to confirm timeline expectations. Meetings can take place on the phone or via video call, or at your office if local to NJ. For writing projects, we will discuss goals, objectives, research, source materials, and other resources required to produce the texts. I will use this information to produce a detailed time and cost estimate. Once agreed to, clients will be required to sign off on the terms of service contract and estimate.

Process

Before beginning a project, I listen to clients closely and take notes of their descriptions of what a project entails. I ask lots of questions to make sure I can best meet client expectations. Some of the information I obtain includes:

  • The nature of the company/product/service being offered.

  • The competitive landscape and what differentiates the company/product/service in the field.

  • The target audience/buyer persona.

Whether writing, editing, or proofreading, having this information helps me to connect with the customer/reader.

Fees

Fees are negotiable depending on complexity of material, research required, etc. Please see the Editing and Proofreading section for category descriptions.

Proofreading: $25-$50/hr

Copy editing: $50-$75/hr

Substantive editing: $100-$125/hr

ABOUT ME

^

My name is Gabrielle and I love to write and edit. I hate being bored and I love to learn. I have a BA and MA in English, so of course my first job out of college was as a  Microsoft Office corporate trainer all across NJ! You might wonder how my English degrees were at all useful in such a position, and my answer is this: all the educational writing experience – having to be clear, concise, and interesting while analyzing and explaining a wide range of texts and topics – enabled me to convey more technical topics in a way that learners could easily grasp. It was actually a very gratifying experience, and turning difficult or unexciting or technical material into words that made sense to learners was fun and fulfilling and became the foundation for the career that followed.

Over the past 20 years, I worked for a small, US/Canadian, technical education training equipment and curriculum company with global reach, that was then bought by a large, German automation company with larger global reach. I was a writer, technical writer, instructional designer, editor, and proofreader in the engineering department. I then moved to the marketing department where I wrote, edited, and proofread all marketing communications. I also did the graphic design and layout of all the brochures and trade show exhibits. (Like I said, I hate being bored and I love to learn!) Additionally, I was responsible for writing and editing website texts and standardizing/Americanizing all English texts that had been either written in English by native French or German speakers or translated into English from French or German by a human translator or translation software/AI (e.g., Google Translate).

And on the side, I've done writing, proofreading, and editing work for friends and clients.

While my roles have been diverse, my job has always been the same: to present information in a clear, concise, and engaging way that people find appealing. Now, as an independent contractor, I devote myself full-time to bringing my years of writing, editing, and proofreading experience and skills to clients in businesses large and small.  Because whether for clients, leads, customers, employees, or students, information must attract, engage, and delight. That's my mission. Working with words and finding the exact right way to articulate a message is my “A-ha!” moment. One that I can never get enough of!
